The year was 1989. Taylor Swift was born and Subaru launched the engine known as the EJ20. Through the years, while Taytay went through a dozen break-ups, Subaru filled its trophy cabinet from the World Rally Championships and even the Nürburgring 24-hour race.
Like Taylor Swift singing, “I promise that you’ll never find another like me,” Subaru is also finally letting go of the EJ20 with the aptly named Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition. Cue the, “ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh.”
Limited to just 555 examples, the Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition (man, that’s a mouthful) features a balanced engine, gold-painted BBS 19-inch aluminum rims, a special engine cover, and some snazzy interior bits (including sporty Recaro seats). Taylor Swift-level break-ups do not come standard though. Sadly, since the EJ20-powered is a JDM-only model, all examples are destined for the Land of the Rising Sun. It will showcased to the public for the first time at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
With Subaru finally bidding adieu to the EJ20 engine, this rather long chapter to the WRX STI’s history is finally coming to a close. With the Levorg confirmed to arrive at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, a potential Chicago Auto Show, Detroit Auto Show, or LA Auto Show next year is likely. Either way, the next chapter should be pretty exciting.
