Honda Launches New BR-V and Civic Limited Edition Variants

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) is introducing new limited edition variants of the BR-V and Civic for 2019 with enhancements suiting the needs of trendy and active Filipino customers.

Honda’s second best-selling and locally manufactured model, the New BR-V has been a strong contender in the competitive 7-seater small SUV market. Known for being the most powerful in its class, the BR-V continues to boast a very capable yet fuel efficient powertrain combined with a flexible interior arrangement making the BR-V the practical 7-seater SUV for Filipino families.

For 2019, Honda is introducing a limited edition of the BR-V, the BR-V 1.5 Prestige CVT.  Equipped with new exterior upgrades such as a new Prestige Design Black Front Grille, Front and Rear Bumper Skid Garnish, Side Skirts, Tailgate Garnish, Tailgate Spoiler, and Exhaust Pipe Finisher, the New BR-V 1.5 Prestige CVT showcases a more distinct and masculine body styling further enhancing its SUV image. In addition, this limited edition variant sits on new Prestige Design 16-inch Alloy Wheels, which differentiate the exterior profile of this limited edition. To commemorate the BR-V’s limited edition variant, a Prestige Emblem can also be found at the rear making this variant distinguishable amongst other BR-V variants.

The BR-V 1.5 Prestige CVT will retail at a price of P 1,075,000 and will be available in two colors, Taffeta White and Modern Steel Metallic. Only 210 units of this variant will be available.

As Honda’s most notable nameplate in its lineup, the Civic continues to embody the sporty yet practical characteristics the model has been known for. With its sporty driving dynamics complemented by its sporty exterior styling, sharply defined character lines, and its sophisticated yet spacious interior, the Civic has continued to be the market leader in the C-segment category here in the Philippines.

For 2019, Honda is once again bringing in the Civic RS Turbo CVT in Brilliant Sporty Blue available with the same suggested retail price of P 1,608,000. Only 30 units of this exclusive variant will be available nationwide.

It's Confirmed: the Mazda CX-8 is Coming to the Philippines

After a premature announcement two years ago and an announcement that it’ll be assembled alongside the CX-5 in Malaysia, Mazda Philippines is confirming that it is expanding its CX-line of vehicles with the 2020 CX-8 (check out our first impressions). Sitting between the CX-5 and CX-9 in size (and likely price), the CX-8 is a new option in the growing number of three-row SUVs in the market.

Manufactured at a dedicated new section at the Inokom Assembly plant located in Kulim, the CX-8 joins the CX-5 as the second model sourced by Mazda Philippines from Malaysia.

Rather than being based off the CX-5, the CX-8 is actually based on the larger CX-9 platform. With that, it promises to offer a comfortable seating space across all three rows. Utilizing a theater-style seating arrangement, the driver maintains an ideal driving position while the third row can accommodate adults with a height of 170 centimeters with no difficulty. Moreover, the third row has 75 mm of space between the floor mat and the bottom of the second-row seat.

Thanks to a new investment in their painting facilities at Inokom, the CX-8 is available in 6 shades including two premium shades: Soul Red Crystal and Machine Gray Metallic.

Regardless of color, the design fits seamlessly into Mazda’s existing line-up. The front uses strong, horizontal lines, including horizontal chrome bars in the grille itself. The width of the front face and sharp LED headlights meanwhile emphasize road presence. At the back, a horizontal chrome bar joins the taillights which are reminiscent of the CX-9. At each corner are standard 19-inch wheels on all variants.

Inside, the CX-8 blends both the CX-5 and CX-9’s design elements. The rear doors open up to 80 degrees allowing easier ingress/egress to all rows or to allow the easy installation or removal of child seats. The Mazda Connect infotainment system features standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while a windshield-projected heads-up display adds convenience for the driver. Other equipment includes triple-zone climate control with rear vents and power seats for the front occupants.

As a family-oriented SUV, the CX-8 put emphasis on creating a refined, quiet cabin allowing a conversation to be made in all three rows. To suppress NVH, vibration damping materials in the rear fenders were used along with a reduction in the gap between the roof molding and roof spoiler as well as application of sound absorbing material at the base of the D-pillars.

Safety features include a full complement of airbags, ABS with EBD, adaptive front lighting, adaptive headlights, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, driver attention alert, smart city brake support, and a 360-degree parking camera.

As for powertrain, the Malaysian-assembled CX-8 is available with two engines: the normally-aspirated 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G and the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D. The gasoline engine version makes 192 horsepower and 258 Nm of torque, while the diesel does 188 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic.

Mazda Philippines will reveal the local variants and prices of the CX-8 closer to its launch date which is expected in the next few months.

Review: 2019 Kia Sportage GT-Line Diesel

Filipino car buyers are a cruel, finicky bunch. When Kia’s then distributor launched the fourth-generation Sportage in 2016, they brought along a well-loaded GT-Line trim equipped with a diesel engine and all-wheel drive. It sure had all the ingredients for success until everyone saw the price tag: P 1.795 million. After that, the complaints all rolled in: too expensive, ill-equipped, etc. Well, here’s news for you: three years later, the refreshed Sportage is out. Now sold by Kia’s new distributor, guess what? It’s actually more expensive, and that’s not even considering it’s lost all-wheel drive in the process.

It sure elicits a strong “what are they smoking” reaction, especially those considering a compact crossover with good punch. But then look at the two other compact crossovers in the market offering a diesel with a 2WD layout: the Honda CR-V S Diesel and the Hyundai Tucson GLS CRDi; it dawns on you: holy shit—the Sportage GT-Line is now the most affordable top-trim (ish) diesel-fed compact crossover on the market today.

For sure, the loss of all-wheel drive will be lamented by some, but for 99 percent of Sportage buyers, the trade off is worth it simply because the heaviest trailing they’ll be doing is climbing up parking inclines. In return, this Sportage GT-Line remains largely inflation-proof while keeps all of its exterior and interior goodies which put it, at least, at par with the competition.

Outside, the changes are fairly minimal. The Macan-esque front-end is far less of a Porsche facsimile thanks to the revised lower front bumper, new grille, and headlights. That said, the new lighting signature—the four LED dots in the headlights and the slit-like pattern in the taillights are much more inline with what Stuttgart churns out these days. Deliberate Teutonic connection or not, it is undeniably handsome. Even in subdued shades like Mercury Blue, this GT-Line ticks all the right boxes from its aggressively-offset 19-inch wheels to its right mix of lines and curves. It doesn’t look as boxy or bulky as most other crossovers, yet maintains a sense of gravitas enabling it to play with the big boys.

Inside though tells a very different story for the Sportage. It’s clear that Kia wanted to create a minimalist cabin, but what they came up with is something somber and cold. The experience can feel particularly discontenting for the passengers, front or back, who’ll have to stare at an empty plastic dash or plain door trims; devoid of any trimming. After a while, you’ll start to wish for a panoramic sunroof (removed with this update), fake wood, or carbon fiber just to bring light in and break the monotony. And that’s a shame because start poking around and the cabin’s actually well-constructed with well-damped switchgear, quality leather, and soft-touch plastics (well, at least the upper part).

The experience is very different for the driver. With all the instrumentation and controls canted towards him, he’ll feel immediately in control. This might be a conscious design decision on Kia’s part, but this formula works for a sportscar and not a family-oriented crossover. Still, at least the ergonomics are solid with ample adjustments to the steering wheel and seat, and clear view of the instrumentation and ginormous infotainment screen. Visibility is more or less alright, but the thick A-pillars do tend to obstruct cyclists and motorcycles from time to time.

Despite its compact-looking exterior design, the Sportage is actually roomy. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, while the back row is spacious with ample foot, leg, and knee room. There’s no power tailgate here, but open the cargo hold and there’s an impressive 491 liters. The cargo hold is wide and long, but not nearly as deep as its rivals. Thankfully, it can be expanded up to 1,480 liters with the rear seats folded. There are also plenty of storage options too, and a commendable amount of charging ports be it USB or 12-volt outlets.

Carried over from before is the Sportage’s 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine. Making 185 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, there’s always plenty of punch. In the urban confines, it moves briskly off the line, with the 8-speed automatic working effortlessly to keep things moving. The shift quality is smooth and close to imperceptible. Of course, stomping on the accelerator brings out some gruffness, but drive it civilly, and you’d be hard-pressed to tell that it’s a diesel. Great as it is in the city, the Sportage feels even better out on the open road. The powertrain makes eating miles effortless, with enough grunt to surge it forward against slower traffic effortlessly. It’s also mighty refined too, with just the coarse tire noise being the only chink in its armor.

By dropping its all-wheel drive, you’d imagine that the Sportage GT-Line should produce stellar fuel economy numbers, right? Unfortunately, that’s not the case. After a week behind the wheel, the average is just 8.62 km/L, figures that put it more in Mazda CX-5 territory, and that one has all-wheel drive. By comparison, the Sportage’s platform twin, the Hyundai Tucson manages 10.20 km/L at the same sort of average speeds. Weird.

Gone unnoticed, the Sportage also gets a re-tweaked suspension that improves ride and handling. Without a back-to-back comparison with the previous model though, it’s hard to feel the difference. However, it does handle well enough—solid, planted, and predictable. It also rides out pockmarked roads with aplomb despite the 45-series rubber.

Feature-wise, the Sportage GT-Line is solid, but not astounding. Aside from the sporty exterior trim and 19-inch wheels, it has everything you’d consider as “must-haves” in this price category such as LED headlights, powered front seats, dual zone climate control, auto dimming rear view mirrors, and all. The removal of the all-wheel drive and sunroof are largely forgivable, but there’s a missed opportunity here to add driver assist features or even a simple 3-point seatbelt for the middle rear occupant. As it stands, it does get a full complement of airbags, ABS with EBD, and stability control.

As solid as its road manners are, and well-speced as it is, are Filipinos finally ready to accept a P 1.820-million Sportage? Based on the price tag alone, it is expensive, but look at it more and you begin to realize that, at least among other compact crossovers, it’s well-speced. In the end, you begin to realize that perhaps its previous lackluster market performance wasn’t driven by the lack of specs or being overpriced, but simply because it just had limited appeal. It was further amplified by the fact that Kia didn’t know what to do with the GT-Line trim before. Now, with two other Kia GTs joining the line-up—the Forte GT and Stinger GT—the Sportage GT-Line doesn’t feel as alone. There’s a chance that some of that magic will rub on the Sportage GT-Line, and that may make consumers take a chance.

We're Not Kidding: This is the Refreshed 2020 Mazda CX-5

This is the refreshed Mazda CX-5. Coming in for the 2020 model year, you won’t be finding any changes on the exterior. Instead, the changes are all happening inside. And frankly, they’re so minor that only owners of the current model will be able to spot easily.

You can scroll through the photos in this story, trying to pick out the differences yourself, but if you’re a bit short on time, we’ll make it easier for you and lay it all out:
  • It gets an updated gauge cluster with a 7-inch LCD screen embedded at the center of the traditional analog gauges. It’s the very same one you’ll find in the all-new Mazda3 and the refreshed Mazda6.
  • The climate control buttons are also borrowed from the all-new Mazda3 and for that, they look more streamlined in appearance.

  • Real layered woodgrain paneling now adorns the interior. It’s a slight update from the current woodgrain design.
  • One-touch up and down power windows for all.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is now standard.
  • For safety, it’s not known whether Mazda Philippines will spec the 2020 CX-5 with the i-Activsense driver assist suite, but at least for the top-trim Malaysian produced units (where we source our CX-5), it adds a 360-degree camera on top of lane keep assist, blind spot indicators, and rear cross traffic alert.

Powetrain-wise, the 2020 CX-5 remains unchanged, but it does get G-Vectoring Control Plus or GVC-Plus. The system, which is also standard on the refreshed Mazda6 and the all-new Mazda3, can apply a light braking force selectively to enhancing cornering agility. This is on top of the standard GVC which varies engine torque in response to steering inputs.

Now, normally we’d be the first to tell you to hold out and wait for this updated model to arrive. However, given how minor these updates are, getting the current model may be the more prudent option, especially if you are looking for a deal. Remember, discounts are on offer for the remaining 2019 units, particularly the AWD variants. That said, if you still plan to hold out, the earliest timeline for the 2020 CX-5 to arrive would be early next year.

McLaren Returns to Mercedes-Benz Power in 2021

After a tumultuous relationship with Honda and a solid, but unspectacular season so far with Renault, McLaren Racing is hoping to bounce back to the forefront of the Formula grid with the announcement that they will be returning to Mercedes-Benz power from 2021.

Under a long-term agreement Mercedes-Benz will supply McLaren with engines from 2021 to 2024. This is the first time that McLaren and Mercedes-Benz will come together since 2014. It must be remembered that the McLaren and Mercedes-Benz partnership that spanned 19 years (1995-2014) produced three Formula One World Championships.

Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing, commented: “This agreement is an important step in our long-term plan to return to success in Formula 1. Mercedes is the benchmark, both as a team and a power unit, so it is natural we would seek to secure a relationship with the company for the next phase of our journey. This announcement reflects the confidence of our shareholders and is an important message to our investors, employees, partners and fans that we are committed to returning McLaren to the front of the field.”

Meanwhile, Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, concluded: “We are delighted to welcome McLaren back to the Mercedes-Benz racing family with this new power unit supply agreement. Although the two brands share a prestigious history, this new agreement is all about looking to the future and beginning a new era of power unit supply for the years ahead. McLaren have been putting in place the building blocks of their revival over recent seasons, including impressive performances this season with Renault power. We hope that this new long-term agreement marks another milestone for McLaren as they aim to take the fight to the sport’s top teams, including our Mercedes works team.”

Ford May Soon Offer Crack-Resistant Windshields

You find them on the latest smartphones, but not on cars just yet. But that’s all about to change because Ford will soon be offering Gorilla Glass as an option to more of its vehicles soon.

Right now, it’s available as standard equipment on the Ford GT supercar, but thanks to a partnership with Gorilla Glass maker Corning and auto supplier Hyperformance Glass Products, it’ll soon be offered as a more durable, lightweight option for the Ford F-150.

The windshield replaces the inner ply in a traditional windshield with chemically-tempered Gorilla Glass. It’s thinner, more flexible, and is two and a half times stronger at resisting impacts at 30 percent the weight.

Hyperformance choose the F-150 specifically not just because it’s the best-selling vehicle in the US, but because it’s often used as a work truck at construction sites and with that, it’s often subjected to rocks and other debris that may otherwise damage a windshield.

As for the price? It’s not going to be cheap. The windshield sets you back USD 899.95 (~ P 46,702), but it does come with a two-year breakage warranty. Moving forward, Hyperformance says they’re in the middle of developing more vehicle applications on current and future Ford models, including the Mustang.

Toyota Motor Philippines Grooms Future Marketeers

Toyota Motor Philippines is giving future marketeers a leg up in the world of automotive marketing with the first-ever Toyota Young Marketeers Challenge or TYMC.

“What we’re doing here is what we’re going to do in the professional world. So it’s a preview of our future,” said Judith Mae Del Valle, a Marketing Management student from De La Salle College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB), Antipolo when asked why her team joined Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP)’s student competition.

The TYMC is a student competition that will recognize the most creative, innovative, and effective marketing campaign. For its inaugural run, Toyota Motor Philippines has chosen its best-selling passenger car, the Vios.

“We launched TYMC to provide college and university students a learning opportunity beyond the classroom,” said Cristina Arevalo, First Vice President for Brand and Product Planning of TMP. “We’re giving them a platform to practice their marketing skills and knowledge by creating industry-ready campaigns for an exciting product that young marketeers can develop fun ideas for - which is the Philippine’s best-selling sedan, the Toyota Vios.”

To kick off the program, TMP invited the students and their faculty advisors to an immersion tour with TMP’s brand and marketing experts. To get the student teams more familiar with the product, the immersion program started with a tour of TMP’s plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna where the Vios is being manufactured.

The teams were also brought to TMP’s partner marketing and advertising agencies to learn from industry practitioners. Through this part of the immersion tour, they were able to see how campaign strategies are conceptualized and brought to life through different marketing channels.

The TMP plant visit participants said the tour helped them develop insights on the Toyota Vios which they were tasked to develop a campaign for.

“The Vios is not a final masterpiece, but a kaizen process, a work in progress,” said De La Salle College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) Manila Marketing Management major Ronald Calaingan. “It’s the best in the market right now but it doesn’t mean that it couldn’t get better. That’s what Toyota is doing right now, it keeps on improving the Vios.”

“This is a great opportunity for us students to learn and also to share our knowledge on what we’ll be getting from the plant tour and also the whole experience of being here at the Toyota competition for the marketing students,” said Elijah Francois Corea who’s representing University of Santo Tomas (UST) Junior Marketing Association.

Finalists of the competition will be announced in October and the chosen student teams will face-off in a final pitch day to be judged by automotive and marketing industry luminaries.

The winning teams will receive technology packages and cash grants for their schools. The grand champion will also win a trip to Japan to visit Toyota’s facilities in the brand’s home country. Aside from these prizes, the winning team will also get the chance to have their winning campaign brought to life by Toyota for their marketing campaigns.

Should their ideas win and be turned into reality, how would they feel?

“It’s an honor for us to showcase our talents and skills and our knowledge, and it’s also one way to honor our school and thank them for something that Benilde has instilled in us,” said Solbi Lee of DLS-CSB Manila.

Hyundai Kona Sales are Up 231 Percent So Far in 2019

Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), the official distributor of Hyundai cars and commercial vehicles in the Philippines, sold 2,539 vehicles in August 2019, a 19 percent month-on-month growth from the previous month’s 2,136 units.

Sales hit 22,329 units for the first 8 months of the year, a very slight drop from last year’s 22,511 vehicles. Despite this, HARI remains one of the top-selling automotive brands with strong sales coming from the Reina, Accent, Kona, and H-100.

“Our sustained performance amid external challenges is a result of our never-ending effort to provide excellent after-sales services and premium products for Filipino motorists. Challenges come and go but we go the extra for our customers who will never forget their positive experience with the Hyundai brand,” HARI President and CEO Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo said.

Recently, Hyundai launched another industry first with its 5x5 campaign. The promo offers the country’s first 5-year unlimited mileage warranty with the longest inclusive Preventive Maintenance Service (PMS) package (free 5-year PMS or up to 100,000km, whichever comes first) for every purchase of a Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Santa Fe, or Hyundai Starex from September 23 to November 30, 2019.

“We launched the industry’s first and only 5-year unlimited mileage warranty back in late 2015 because we stand by the quality and durability of Hyundai vehicles. But, we wanted to redefine worry-free ownership thus this free 5-year PMS for Tucson, Santa Fe, and Starex. These three models made Hyundai and now, they are changing the game once more,” Ms. Agudo adds.

The Tucson, Santa Fe, and Starex are part of the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment. Hyundai’s LCV segment grew by 19 percent in the first 8 months of the year hitting 9,864 in sales from 8,288 units over the same period in 2018. In terms of growth, the Hyundai Kona leads the pack, increasing sales by 231 percent over the period.

Year-to-date, sales of Passenger Cars (PC) as of August 2019 reached 11,821 units, a 15 percent decrease compared to the same period last year as the entire market continues to shift to SUVs. Nonetheless, sales of Hyundai PC models namely the Reina and Accent were sustained with sales reaching 11,500 units over the period, about half of the company’s total sales.

Meanwhile, Hyundai’s CV segment more than doubled from last year’s sales of 288 units to this year’s 644 units, or 124 percent growth. The H350 and County elevated this segment’s year-to-date sales with combined sales of around 460 units. Sales of the HD78 medium truck grew by 244 percent over the period.

“Increased economic activity fueled by small and medium businesses helped grow the LCV and CV segments. We continue to establish strategic partnerships to empower businesses by solving mobility challenges such as ‘last mile logistics’,” Ms. Agudo said.

Geely Philippines Garners Over 50 Coolray Reservations, Opens First Showroom

The day after its official brand launch in the country, Sojitz G Auto Philippines, the distributor of Geely vehicles opened its first showroom located in the heart of Quezon City.

Located at 75 Corregidor Street EDSA, Quezon City, the 1,160 square-meter showroom can display up to 20 vehicles inside, while a 2,600-square meter space is dedicated for aftersales service. This is notable because it’s considered one of the largest service centers for Geely globally.

Apart from the Coolray sub-compact SUV, the North EDSA showroom also showcases the latest technology from Geely including the Coolray Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and the Geely Atlas compact SUV.

Before its showroom opening, Geely started pre-selling the Coolray through a mall road show. The pre-selling campaign which had stops at U.P. Town and Trinoma in Quezon City and Uptown Mall in BGC garnered more than 50 Coolray reservations. Some of these units were officially turned over to their owners as part of the showroom inauguration ceremonies.

The all-new Genio also comes with a combi-brake system with a front disc and rear mechanical drum.

Perfectly matching The all-new Genio’s role as a woman-centric motorcycle, HPI announces that Yassi Pressman has been chosen as Honda’s newest female brand ambassador.

For motorcycle riders who love urban adventures, HPI is also introducing the all-new Honda ADV150.

The tough and adventurous styling adopts a suspension, tire, and riding position ideal for all road surfaces both rough and smooth. Without a doubt though, the ADV150’s most unique feature is its adjustable windshield. Furthermore, it comes with an all-LED lighting system, fully digital meter cluster, power charger console box, 28-liter large utility box, and a smart key system.

The ADV150 also has 14-inch front tire size and 13-inch rear tire size as well as twin sub-tank rear suspension for a more comfortable ride. And since safety is foremost in all of Honda’s products, the ADV150 has an emergency stop signal (ESS) along with a one-channel ABS system.

The Honda ADV150 gets its power from 150 cc engine making 15 horsepower and 13.8 Nm of torque.

These two new models will soon be available at all Honda 3S Shops on December for the al-new Genio and January for the ADV150. The price for the Genio is at P 72,900, while the ADV150 has a retail price of P 149,000.
