Suzuki Philippines Posts 19 Percent Growth for First 9 Months of 2019

Consistent with its strong performance for the first two quarters of the year, Suzuki Philippines (SPH) finishes the third quarter with positive growth yet again, enabling the company to post 19 percent sales growth for the first nine months of the year over the same period in 2018.

“Suzuki’s current standing in the Philippine automotive industry is a significant milestone for the brand. After securing the fourth spot in the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) ranking – the highest rank in the brand’s history – and climbing to the fifth spot in the local automotive industry roster last quarter, we at Suzuki Philippines can definitely say that 2019 has been a monumental year for the brand,” shared SPH Director and General Manager for Automobile Division Keiichi Suzuki.

“These back-to-back achievements further fuel our drive to deliver on the brand’s promise of quality driving experience with every Suzuki vehicle,” he added.

The Ertiga, Swift, and Celerio continue to be Suzuki’s best-selling vehicles. The models combined for 56 percent of total sales from January to September this year.

The Ertiga still dominates the Suzuki auto sales chart with a 34 percent share. Meanwhile, the Swift kept its position as the second top-selling Suzuki model with an 11.4 percent share of total sales. Finally, accounting for 11 percent share of sales, the Celerio ranks third among Suzuki’s top-selling vehicles.

Suzuki Philippines sees positive momentum moving forward, driven by the launch of new products such as the Carry small truck and the refreshed 2020 Vitara crossover.

The Nissan Navara is Now the Philippines's Best-Selling Pick-up Truck

Nissan has posted record monthly sales in the Philippines with an all-time high of 4,768 units sold in September. This achievement strengthened the brand’s top-three position among members of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI).

Nissan sales in September mark the highest monthly sales for the brand in the Philippines, outperforming the previous record of 4,616 units sold in March 2019. The September sales figure is a 21.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Driving this performance is the Nissan Navara, which accounted for 46 percent of sales for the month. The Navara’s strong sales also made it the best-selling pick-up for September in the Philippines. The Nissan Terra also pushed brand’s record sales, with the mid-size SUV contributing 23 percent for the month.

Atsushi Najima, president and managing director for Nissan in the Philippines, said: “The strong sales performance is the result of the company’s strong fundamentals. Excellent products and services, supported by passionate employees and dealer partners are the foundations of Nissan’s continued success in the Philippines.”

Is Ford Philippines Bringing in the Transit MPV?

Is Ford Philippines finally bringing in a full-sized MPV to battle the likes of the Toyota Hiace Super Grandia and Hyundai Grand Starex? It seems so based on a teaser they’ve sent us for a product launch happening at the end of November.

Based on the teaser (invite) photo, it looks to be the Ford Transit MPV. A quick photo shop shows that it perfectly aligns and key aspects of the design such as the mounting of the front camera and grille detail line up perfectly.

Now, the question is: what sort of specs will the Philippines get? Well, that would all depend on where the Transit is sourced. If we’re looking at Europe, we’ll be getting the latest drivetrain—a 2.0-liter turbodiesel shared with the Ranger and Everest. For its services in the Transit, it makes 170 horsepower. And the transmission is the same 10-speed automatic, too. This won’t be out of the question because another left-hand drive market, Vietnam, gets a turbodiesel version of the Transit.

However, if sourcing is from North America, it’ll get one of three engine choices: the outgoing Ranger’s 3.2-liter inline-5, a normally-aspirated 3.7-liter V6, or a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. In these cases, the transmission is a 6-speed automatic. And while we have nothing against getting these powertrains, consider it an opportunity lost for Ford Philippines if they’d plop in a large displacement gasoline instead of a torquey diesel in their MPV. This could relegate the Transit from a potential volume player into a niche player once more (see E-150).

Now, the Transit is also offered in a dizzying array of heights, wheelbase, and seating configurations. With that in mind, the safest bet would be for Ford to offer at least two seating configurations—a more luxurious 10-seater with a low roof and a 12-15-seater with a high roof—with these two, it can make them a player in a large chunk of the large MPV segment.

As for the price? Well, gray market Ford Transits currently sell for north of P 2.3-million. If Ford Philippines wants to make a dent, they’d be undercutting these “entrepreneurs” for sure. Again, this is all speculative for now, so we guess all eyes will be on Ford this coming November is they can truly spring a surprise.

Fiat Chrysler Confirms Merger Talks with Peugeot Citroen

After Nissan blocked a potential merger with Renault, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles or FCA seems to have found a potential new partner: PSA. After reports on a potential business combination emerged, FCA has confirmed that talks are underway with the parent company of Peugeot, Citroen, and Opel.

The merger, worth USD 50 billion could potentially transform the global automotive industry given that it will form the fourth largest auto manufacturing group. The merger could also help leverage technical expertise from both groups to help them with challenges such as electrification. Moreover, the merger could help save around 4 billion euros.

While FCA has yet to comment on the details of the proposed merger, Reuters cites sources that the merger will entail a 50/50 share swap, creating a new company formally based in the Netherlands. In terms of board structure, the combined company will have 11—six from Peugeot’s side, and five from Fiat Chrysler’s.

Yes, You Can Order the P 9.92-Million Toyota GR Supra GT4 Racecar

If you find the Toyota Vios Race Car a bit too tame, why don’t you consider a Toyota several notches higher? After showing off the GR Supra GT4 racecar last July, Toyota Gazoo has finally revealed its final specs and eye-watering price. Oh, and yes, you can buy it even from the Philippines.

On sale from March 2020, the GR Supra will be offered to customer teams in Europe first, followed by North America in August, and then Japan/Asia in October.

The GR Supra GT4 is based off the road-going GR Supra, but tweaked in the hands of Toyota Motorsport GmbH in Germany.

The BMW 3.0-liter inline-6 has been re-tuned to develop 430 horsepower—close to a 100-horsepower jump from the regular GR Supra and 650 Nm of torque. This is then mated to a 7-speed sports automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and a mechanical limited slip differential driving the rear wheels. An Akrapovič exhaust system will be fitted and Ravenol will provide first-fill lubricants.

The front splitter and rear wing are made of natural fiber composite, contributing to an overall weight of just 1,350 kilograms. And following the specification of the GR Supra road car, the front suspension will be MacPherson strut, and rear suspension will be multilink with KW dampers at the front and rear The braking system is enhanced through the use of a dedicated brake caliper for racing, six-piston front and four-piston rear, while running on 305/660-18 Pirelli tires.

The GR Supra GT4 then comes with a high-strength roll cage, and an FIA-standard racing seat with a 6-point racing harness. The interior will feature a carbon fiber instrumental panel with a display and steering wheel specifically designed for GT4 competition.

As for the price, it’ll cost € 175,000 (~ P 9.92 million) and this is excluding things like tax, customs duties, logistics fee, and the like. Take note: despite having a full set of headlights and taillights, the GR Supra GT4 isn’t road legal. Still, for those who want a unique track toy, you can send an email to TRD Business Div. Department No. 1, Motor Sports Business Unit: info_supragt4 [at] toyota-cd.co.jp. They will handle your sale.

Honda's Driver Assist Technology Isn't at Odds with Their Sporty Positioning

Ever since Honda’s founding 71 years ago, they’ve committed to deliver new values for mobility through their broad range of products from motorcycles, power products, automobiles and even jets. Today, with their 2030 Vision as a guide, Honda aims to continue doing just that, but now adding the “joy of expanding their life’s potential” as an additional guiding ethos.

While electrification has taken centerstage, safety also forms an integral part of their future. With “Safety for Everyone” as their guiding concept, Honda sees this as a way for people to enjoy new encounters and discoveries, and at the same time, mitigate anxiety and risk from driving at the same time.

With Honda SENSING, Honda bundled together an impressive list of advanced safety and driver assistive features. The suite is composed of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow (LSF), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

These technologies certainly serve as the building blocks towards creating fully autonomous cars, something Honda has admitted to developing, but they don’t see it as a clash to the brand’s sporty positioning either.

More than anything, it’s all about adding comfort and reducing fatigue says Honda’s team of engineers. It’s not about relinquishing control to a bunch of sensors and a computer. It’s about personal growth and empowering drivers, whether inexperienced or seniors, who would otherwise be unconfident about their skills behind the wheel. Ultimately, the driver will always be in control, as it should be.

Three New Recalls Hit Subaru XV, Impreza, and Forester Models

Attention Impreza, XV, and Forester owners: Subaru has just confirmed that three new recalls affect these three best-selling vehicles in the Philippines, and that Motor Image Pilipinas is working closely with Subaru Corporation of Japan to assist all affected customers.

The first recall affects 2017-2019 Model Year Impreza and XV vehicles manufactured before August 6, 2018. Nearly 1,000 units are affected.

This recall is a precautionary measure to replace the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve. The PCV valve, which is an oil flow control device, may separate and allow engine oil to enter the combustion chamber. This may result in an excessive amount of smoke. The vehicle may experience a loss of power.

The second recall affects the 2017-2019 Model Year Impreza and XV vehicles manufactured from July 28, 2016 to August 21, 2018.

This is a precautionary measure to replace the brake hoses of affected vehicles. There are no safety concerns with regards to the brake system as braking performance is not affected. Due to insufficient sealing, brake fluid may enter the brake hose, causing it to swell. Nearly 1,000 units are affected.

The third recall affects 2017-2020 Model Year Impreza and XV vehicles and 2019-2020 Model Year Forester vehicles equipped with the 2.0-liter engine.

The recall is a precautionary measure to reprogram the Engine Control Module and inspect the ignition coil. Due to improper programming, the ignition coil may be energized after the engine is turned off. This could cause the internal temperature of the coil to increase and lead to a short circuit. Nearly 5,000 units are affected.

“Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified accordingly,” says Uzzi Asuncion, Head of Marketing Department, Motor Image Pilipinas. “We appreciate the understanding and patience of our customers as we finalize the list of affected units through their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).”

“Customer satisfaction does not only happen when the customer buys the vehicle. It should continue throughout the entire duration of the customer’s ownership of a Nissan,” Najima said.

The Nissan Service Center in Cebu also offers amenities such as a customer lounge that offers all-day breakfast, merchandise area, and children’s lounge.

Honda's Unconventional Hybrid System Has a One-Speed Gearbox (w/ Video)

Gasoline-electric hybrids are typically known for one thing: environmentally-conscious motoring. With that, expect sky-high fuel mileage and low tailpipe emissions at the expense of a sordid driving experience. Luckily for enthusiasts, Honda realized that the typical hybrid solution also didn’t fit well with their sporty nature. And so, they’ve developed this: the Sports Hybrid Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive or Sports Hybrid i-MMD.

While the name itself is clunky, the technology behind it is amazing. It automatically switches between three driving modes to provide the highest possible efficiency when driving. These modes comprise: EV Drive, where the lithium-ion battery supplies power to the electric propulsion motor directly; Hybrid Drive, where the engine supplies power to an electric generator motor, which in turn supplies it to the electric propulsion motor; and Engine Drive, where the engine is connected directly to the wheels via a lock-up clutch.

In most urban or city driving situations, the i-MMD will shuffle between Hybrid Drive and EV Drive. In Hybrid Drive, excess power from the petrol engine can also be diverted to recharge the battery via the generator motor. EV Drive permits pure-electric propulsion and can give a zero emissions range of about two kilometers depending on the driving condition and battery charge.

Meanwhile, the Engine Drive mode is the most efficient set-up for cruising at higher speeds and it can be supplemented by an on-demand power ‘boost’ from the electric propulsion motor to supplement engine torque under certain conditions. At a 60 km/h cruise, the i-MMD will typically run in EV Drive for more than half the time. At 100 km/h, it will be in EV Drive for approximately one third of the time.

The software ‘brain’ of the i-MMD system decides when to shuffle between these modes to maximize efficiency, without disturbing the driver or requiring any further thought or input from them.

Now, while the set-up resembles other hybrid vehicles—where an Atkinson cycle gasoline engine, propulsion motor, generator motor, and power control unit are all located under the hood, and a lithium-ion battery back housed under the trunk, the i-MMD does have one innovation: a fixed gear transmission.

Rather than using a conventional transmission, a single fixed-gear ratio creates a direct connection between moving components, resulting in a smoother transfer of torque. This format means Honda’s system is more compact than a planetary eCVT typically found in other hybrid vehicles, as well as being more refined.

Moreover, the transfer between power sources, including the engine stop-start function, is virtually imperceptible. The smooth transfer of torque means there is no driveline shunt or undesirable feedback through the pedals or steering wheel, and the near-silent powertrain means a vehicle equipped with i-MMD boasts outstanding NVH.

The first application of the i-MMD system happens to be larger Honda vehicles, particularly the likes of the CR-V and the Accord. In this set-up, the 2.0-liter i-MMD makes a respectable 184 horsepower and 315 Nm of torque—figures that match their conventionally-powered counterparts featuring the 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engine. But, based on WLTP test protocols, it does 18.87 km/L. However, the more interesting application of the i-MMD system is found in the Civic-based Honda Insight. With a smaller, 1.5-liter displacement, it still makes a healthy 151 horsepower and 267 Nm of torque—yet, it delivers 22.1 km/L. Though Honda hasn’t confirmed it just yet, if this is the very same engine that they’ll fit in the all-new Jazz Hybrid, then you’re looking at a formidable pocket rocket.

As part of their 2030 Vision, the Honda Sports Hybrid i-MMD will form the cornerstone of their plan to reduce their emissions. Yet, it’s equally clear that while they want to produce environmentally-sound vehicles, they still aren’t willing to give up their sporty nature yet. By coming up with unique methods to electrify their vehicles such as the i-MMD system, Honda is able to chart a unique path, driven by one thing: their challenging spirit.

Is the End Near for the Internal Combustion Engine? Not So Says Mazda

With Mazda now joining the Electric Vehicle bandwagon with the MX-30, is the era of the Internal Combustion Engine or ICE finally over? Not so fast, according to Hidetoshi Kudo, Executive Officer in charge of R&D Administration, Product Strategy, and Technical Research Center.

While Kudo-san acknowledges that the peak era for the internal combustion engine is near (2020 if the Energy Technology Perspective report by the International Energy Agency is used as basis), he says there’s no reason to turn away completely from fossil fuels just yet.

Not only does the very same report say that the internal combustion engine will still account for a majority of new car sales even by 2050 (though they’d be electrified in one form or another), but from Mazda’s Well to Wheel perspective, which takes into account not just what energy source is used but how it’s generated, going electric won’t be a one size fits all solution. Furthermore, while others say structural limitations (lack of charging stations) is a primary reason why everyone is slow to adopt EVs, Mazda thinks its down to an EV’s functional limitation, such as lack of range—again, it’s about not being a one size fits all thing. What’s needed, Kudo-san says, are multiple solutions to meet the requirement of reducing emissions.

With that in mind, Mazda’s approach to powertrain development will be a two-prong one. For countries that generate energy through renewable means, Mazda will offer battery electric vehicles. For countries that generate energy using fossil fuels, they will offer improved internal combustion engines (with some form of electrification) that’ll produce even lower fuel consumptions and emissions than the current Skyactiv series engines such as Skyactiv-X.

Moving on, Kudo-san has an interesting explanation as to why the MX-30 didn’t go for record-breaking range. Again, this is all down to Mazda’s Well-to Wheel approach. Conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of lithium-ion batteries, they calculated the amount of emissions each step generates from materials extraction to manufacture, maintenance, and finally, disposal.

They realized that emissions proportionally increase to battery size, and at the 50-kWh mark, the amount of emissions from battery production actually exceed the emissions from vehicle production. Moreover, because traction batteries need replacement at the 160,000-kilomter mark (on the average) to maintain performance, using a 95-kWh battery will actually exceed a diesel vehicle’s emissions from an LCA perspective by 50 percent. In the case of the MX-30, going for a 35.5-kWh makes its LCA emissions lower than its comparative ICE counterpart. Regardless, the resulting 209-kilometer range is still way more than the 50 kilometers of driving a typical EV owner does on a daily basis.

What Mazda proposes instead to increase the range of their EVs would be to adopt a rotary engine as a power generator. Being lightweight and compact in size, it’s ideal for this purpose. And even by plopping down a Wankel, it will still result in lower LCA emissions compared to electric vehicles outfitted with larger batteries. In addition, rotary engines can be adopted quickly to run on a variety of fuels such as LPG, CNG, and even hydrogen making it virtually future-proof.

As a whole, Mazda says they’ll be able to cut their corporate well-to-wheel emissions by 50 percent of 2010 levels by 2030. Though EVs will certainly play a part, the leading  role still belongs to the internal combustion engine which they still believe still has a few tricks up its sleeve. By using a multi-solution approach to combat emissions, they see it as a way to balance environmental preservation with business efficiency.

Chevrolet is Dead in Indonesia

General Motors, the parent company of Chevrolet will cease vehicle sales in the Indonesian market by the end of March 2020. This was revealed by Hector Villarreal, President of GM Southeast Asia after a comprehensive review of potential future business plans for GM Indonesia.

“Globally, GM is taking tough actions to focus its capital and resources. This difficult decision is consistent with GM’s global strategy to focus on markets where there is a clear pathway to sustainable profitability.

“In Indonesia, we lack the scale and domestic manufacturing footprint to sustainably compete in the volume segments of the market.

“These factors have also made our operations more exposed to broader factors in Indonesia, like softening commodity prices and foreign currency pressures.

“Regrettably, this decision impacts a number of our small team of employees, who GM will support with an appropriate severance package and transition support. We are committed to supporting our stakeholders through the transition.”

“Chevrolet owners can also rest assured that we will continue to honor all vehicle warranties and provide aftersales support. Customers will continue to be able to get their Chevrolet vehicles serviced and repaired at authorized outlets throughout Indonesia,” said Villareal.

Chevrolet’s move to close its Indonesian operations echo Ford’s which shuttered their operations there in 2016.

Hino's Modern Jeepneys Complies with DOTr Standards

Hino Motors Philippines (HMP), an active participant in the government’s Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program, was granted by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) the Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for its Hino Eco Class PUV units for Class 2 and Class 3 variants.

We Ask Volkswagen Philippines If They'll Consider Bringing in the All-New 8th Gen Golf

The all-new 8th generation Volkswagen Golf has landed and with it brings progressive updates that include digitalization and electrification technology. It’s set to launch on the market first in Germany by the end of this year with the rest of the world to follow.

An evolutionary version of the company’s MQB platform underpins the Golf and with that brings Volkswagen’s most recent innovations such as electrified powertrains. All gasoline and diesel engines in the new Golf are turbocharged bringing their outputs anywhere between 90 horsepower to 300 horsepower. There are two 3-cylinder gasoline versions and two 4-cylinder diesel ones. The TSI variants in particular feature the Miller Cycle for improved fuel consumption and emissions, while the TDI applies its exhaust treatment twice to cut emissions by as much as 17 percent.

Aside from these typical engines, the new Golf also has three eTSI and two eHybrid variants. Volkswagen will offer the Golf in three eTSI output stages: 110 horsepower, 130 horsepower, and 150 horsepower. Two plug-in hybrid variants will be on offer including the GTE which has 245 horsepower.

Outside, the new Golf continues a more evolutionary approach with the C-pillar remaining the most dominant feature. LED lighting technology replaces all conventional exterior lighting and as such, Volkswagen says this now becomes an unmistakable new styling element of the Golf as well. While its proportions remain unchanged, the front-end has been lowered for better aerodynamics.

Inside, the Golf uses a “digital cockpit” with touch buttons and touch sliders. The German carmaker says this will change the way it’s driven and operated and is thus comparable to the debut of the first ever, touch-based smartphone. Apart from the merging of the 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and 8.25-inch center infotainment display, the new Golf also changes the way functions are operated. For example, the lights are now operated by a digital panel to the left of the instruments, while the center console features a shift-by-wire shifter.

When asked if the Philippines will see the all-new Golf, Volkswagen Philippines says it’s currently not in the pipeline. Having said that, they did not say no. Perhaps the sportier versions, such as the all-new GTI (or even GTE) could see a limited run release, perhaps in time for Volkswagen Philippines’s seventh birthday next year?

Mazda Philippines Unveils 2020 CX-5 with New Fully-Loaded FWD Variant (w/ Specs)

Previewed at the sidelines of the CX-8 regional launch in Malaysia, Mazda Philippines has formally introduced the 2020 CX-5 to the Philippine market. Headlining the changes is the availability of a new fully-loaded trim: the CX-5 FWD Sport that slots just below the two all-wheel drive variants.

“We are pleased to launch an all-new variant in the Mazda CX-5 range which will allow consumers to enjoy the model’s premium features at a more affordable price,” shares Steven Tan, president and CEO of Mazda Philippines. He adds, “Since its introduction in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has been our third best-selling model with close to 5,600 units sold so far. We believe that by introducing more top-of-the-line features in front-wheel drive trim, we can provide a more luxurious and premium driving experience for an even wider market.”

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv-G lineup features enhancements in its suspension designed to deliver an even more supple ride. Meanwhile, interior design elements that elevate the premium feel of the cabin towards the brand’s next generation direction were likewise introduced for the 2020 model year.

Like the 2.5-liter AWD Sport variant, the 2.0-liter FWD Sport also features a new 7-inch TFT reconfigurable instrument cluster display to provide needed vehicle information as preferred by the driver. Also new for 2020 are the updated air conditioning system controls that are now similar to the latest Mazda6 and all-new Mazda3’s layout. The Mazda Connect infotainment system now comes with Apple Car Play and Android Auto smartphone mirroring across the 2020 Skyactiv-G range while the 2.0-liter FWD Sport now also features a 10-speaker Bose Premium Sound System, similar to what is standard in the AWD Sport gas and diesel variants.

New black leather seats with orange trims in the AWD and FWD Sport enhance the dynamic luxury feel of both variants. Now also featuring a memory function, the FWD Sport is at par with its i-Activ All-Wheel Drive-equipped sibling in terms of convenience features. And for the first time in a 2.0-liter Mazda CX-5, the power tailgate now comes standard with the FWD Sport.

On the safety front, both 2020 Mazda CX-5 AWD and FWD Sport variants are equipped with Adaptive Front-Lighting LED system and 360-degree view cameras. They also both come standard with front and rear parking sensors to aid in maneuvering in tight spaces. With standard Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert systems, customers who prefer either an AWD or an FWD Mazda CX-5 will be able to experience a heightened level of safety and comfort with every drive.

For model year 2020, the Mazda CX-5 will be made available with the following prices:
  • 2.0-Liter FWD Pro - 1,730,000
  • 2.0-Liter FWD Sport - P 1,890,000
  • 2.5-Liter AWD Sport - P 1,990,000
The 2.2-Liter AWD Sport Diesel will remain a 2019 model (for now) while supplies last. The price remains at P 2,230,000. The updated AWD Sport Diesel variant is expected to arrive some time next year.
