Nissan "Resets" Its Design Philosophy to Speak in Simple, Clean Lines


Embedded in a hillside deep in Japan’s Kanagawa prefecture lies Nissan’s Global Design Center. There, Executive Design Director Satoru Tai focuses on Nissan’s next design horizon, a new direction that speaks in simple, clean lines.

Tai-san sees a future where less is more in terms of what we see and what we interact with in our daily lives. His first teaser of Nissan’s design direction was the IMk concept. Then, the vision has come fully into focus at the show with the unveiling of the Ariya Concept. Together, these electric vehicles promise to usher in a new era of design made possible by Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision for changing how vehicles are powered, driven, and connected to society.

The Nissan Ariya Concept, the successor to the IMx concept vehicle shown at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, provides a glimpse of a near-future midsize crossover EV from Nissan. The IMk reimagines the compact urban commuter, catering to a broad customer base in search of something new, chic, compact and powerful to drive. The two vehicles represent Nissan’s completely reimagined design philosophy, centered on seamless connectivity and a minimal, cohesive design, mixed with pure electrified power.

Tai also expanded on Nissan’s new design direction and how it seamlessly blends into the customer’s connected lifestyle.

Q: Why did Nissan establish a new design direction?

Tai: The Ariya Concept and IMk are the latest design icons of Nissan Intelligent Mobility. They are bookends that showcase the broad spectrum of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility landscape, from the urban commuter to the family-size crossover SUV. Both vehicles embody the possibilities of instant, clean, powerful driving performance in a seamless manner. They express the connectivity and autonomous capability of the coming era in a distinct, Nissan-branded way.

Q: What are the key points of the new design language?

Tai: Nissan’s new design philosophy centers on a Japanese minimal approach to accent advanced technology that blends seamlessly into the two concept vehicles and a customer’s lifestyle. These serve as key elements in what we call “Timeless Japanese Futurism.” A minimal approach mainly refers to the physical form – such as the IMk’s simple, yet striking exterior shape or Ariya Concept’s sleek body that minimizes drag coefficient. These seamless expressions display the potential of EVs and future driving technology in a distinctly Japanese way.

Timeless Japanese Futurism is a way for Nissan to maintain an iconic, traditional Japanese flavor, but re-imagined with a refreshing perspective.

Q: What are some examples of “traditional Japanese flavor” in these vehicles?

Tai: Both the Ariya Concept and the IMk feature designs that incorporate Japanese DNA, or “J-DNA”. These include the traits of iki (chic), utsuroi (transition), ma (spatiotemporal openings) and kabuku (behave boldly against the social grain). For the Ariya Concept, we incorporated a geometric kumiko pattern into the front grille, or what we now call the “shield,” which blends seamlessly into the clearcoat. This pattern is also echoed in the interior with the andon lighting, which shows the openness of the footwell and the doors.

For the IMk, we drew from a different inspiration that resulted in a koushi (latticed) pattern and mizuhiki (tight woven rope) pattern. This is echoed in the shield and on the roof graphic, rear accents and wheels.

Q: Why is this “Japanese minimalist” trait important?

Tai: We needed to reset how we design, because the way these vehicles are powered and used has changed. EV technology is here – and the entire mindset, from architecture to noise – is quite different than a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle.

EVs are quiet and powerful, so we wanted to reflect that in our vehicles with a design language that’s clean and minimal, yet still emotional, powerful, attractive and sleek. It’s not easy to represent an entirely new automotive movement with something that’s visually simple.

Q: What did you focus on in particular with these two vehicles?

Tai: It’s all about the proportion and the potential offered by 100 percent electric platforms. So we asked ourselves, how do we tailor the design over this new unique platform? How do we showcase the proportions?

For the Ariya Concept, we started with an elevated stance and a sleek, linear body, expressing motion sitting on large wheels. Satin copper arches highlight the airy, flat floor cabin to create something drastically different from conventional gasoline-powered SUVs. The Ariya Concept’s EV platform allows for D-segment roominess in a C-segment vehicle.

With the IMk, we wanted to convey not just visual seamlessness, but also seamlessness in terms of connectivity, evident by its prismatic instrument and control panel layout. This will inspire a later phase of Nissan Intelligent Mobility form language and design.

Q: Do these concept vehicles share any similar elements?

Tai: The exteriors of both strike a balance between beautiful and exclusive, with proportions that show what’s possible with Nissan’s 100 percent EV platforms. For both concepts, the front view makes a strong impression. The grille is replaced with a “shield” that incorporates an illuminated Nissan emblem in the center. The lower portion is bordered by subtle lighting.

The shield is the vehicle’s face to the world. It needs to show strength, style and inspiration. A grille is no longer needed for engine cooling, but a shield is very much needed to protect the technology hidden within the vehicles, including radar, cameras and other sensors, such as those that help the vehicle read the road when using the ProPILOT 2.0 driver assistance system.

Q: Other than size, what are the main differences between the IMk’s interior and that of the Ariya Concept?

Tai: For the Ariya Concept, the interior is slightly darker and moodier than the IMk. We tried to use darker colors on the lower sections and lighter colors above to create a cohesive, layered environment that welcomes you into a futuristic, organic space.

The Ariya Concept’s colors are a deep blue gray. For the IMk they’re much lighter, and airy, like that of a cafe or a chic lounge. The use of colors and textures is really the difference between the two. The vehicles are vastly different in size and class but share qualities that make them chic and appropriate for customers interested in those types of vehicles.

Q: What about the materials? Not only the types, but also the placement?

Tai: Designers are always searching for new materials and textures, to make interiors engaging and enjoyable. We considered materials that didn’t look heavy, yet gave the impression of solidness, high tech and functional.

For example, in the IMk, the surfaces are treated with anti-soiling agents to prevent stains and fingerprints. The lighter color, which isn’t traditional for a car in this class, is very trendy in home interiors and cafes. We wanted to create that light and airy environment in the IMk, while keeping it durable.

The IMk’s carpet is made of a new fiber that creates an open atmosphere but still feels very cozy. This is one of the many elements that make this vehicle very chic.

Copper tones are used throughout both concept vehicles, adding brightness to the interior and enhancing the premium impression. Copper has been an important part of traditional Japanese culture, in which artisans formed the metal into functional works of art. We carefully curated the use of copper to add an emotional value that communicates the dawn of a new automotive era – rather than simply using expensive materials or shiny textiles.

Q: The IMk’s interior is unusually elegant and stylish for a kei-car. What were your priorities in designing the cabin?

Tai: The IMk’s cabin possesses a feeling of openness. The shapes and color details are designed to suggest an uplifting space. We wanted the IMk to be chic, so we gave it a bench seat to create the same welcome feeling as a lounge or cafe. We also wanted to keep some richness in the section of the doors, the instrument panel and even the seats, by giving them the right texture through their materials.

Of course, if we kept everything flat here, there would be more physical space. But we would lose some of the beauty, and we didn’t want to go that route. The IMk isn’t about being more spacious than a traditional small car. The goal is to be an upscale, stylish partner with a relaxing space that drivers will really want to own.

Q: The IMk concept is the size of a kei car in Japan. How did the new concept EV platform influence its design?

Tai: The IMk is a car for people who’ve never before considered buying a vehicle of this size. The electrification of this urban commuter, and the EV platform, elevate the genre to a completely new level. It will capture a new marketplace, such as luxury-car owners in Tokyo who want stylish exclusivity and great performance, yet still want to be able to find a place to park. The level of sophistication and chic textures is unmatched in the segment.

Q: What about the new EV platform under the Nissan Ariya Concept?

Tai: The EV platform allows the Ariya Concept to have a flat cabin floor. This results in extremely efficient packaging, with a more open footwell and thinner instrument panel and seats. This in turn allows for a pleasant space for the driver and occupants to relax and socialize. However, because of the flat floor, all the interior materials are much more visible. Traditionally, the floor of the cabin is hidden by shadows and overhanging interior components.

Now, every design element is front and center, especially the instrument panel and seats. So it was vital that we used complementary materials and colors, ensuring that the components blended with each other seamlessly.

Q: Who did you consider to be the target customers for these vehicles?

Tai: For the Nissan Ariya Concept, the target customer is a young driver with a family. We really wanted this car to be an expression of that person. Ideally, I see this person as someone who can afford anything but chooses this vehicle, because it relays a strong EV message in a cool, sporty way.

For the Nissan IMk concept, we envisioned customers who’ll feel empowered and confident when driving this car. The stylish and comfortable interior design elements make it their own unique room to relax in. Therefore, we tried to think about the various aspects of their daily lives and express them in the design, inside and out.

Q: Was any part of the Nissan Ariya Concept – which we hear may be close to production – designed with fully autonomous driving in mind?

Tai: As Nissan’s design language moves forward, we always have to keep autonomous driving in mind – for today and for expanded use tomorrow.

The Ariya Concept was designed with the latest ProPILOT 2.0 driver assistance system in mind. This system allows for hands-off, eyes-on driving in certain cases. During those situations, you can stretch your legs all the way out, relax and enjoy the benefits of the EV interior architecture. It allows for a new spatial experience, highlighted by the andon lighting in the lower footwell. This is not only an attractive design element, but also effectively shows the usability of space.

Q: What do you want people to take away from these concepts?

Tai: These concepts show how we’re redefining the form language for Nissan. Both the Ariya Concept and IMk incorporate hints of Japanese DNA with their minimal approach to surfaces and shape, yet are seamless and state-of-the-art. This is the concept of “Timeless Japanese Futurism.” The word minimal is self-evident, but seamless goes deeper. It has both a physical quality, such as flush exterior door handles and smooth panel transitions, as well as a spiritual one, in the way it expresses both Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology and Japanese precision and craftsmanship. Combined, these concepts will define the future of Nissan design.

Nissan's PR Language Runs Wild with the New Ariya Concept


Nissan unveils what they call a concept that epitomizes “its brand philosophy for the next evolutionary phase of the automobile.” If that’s really the case, then prepare to be bored with the Ariya.

Suffice to say, as far as concept cars go, it’s not wild enough. Yet, because Nissan counters that by saying “the bold styling, and unconventional interior and exterior elements” could make it to future production cars, perhaps that makes it a bit more palatable.

Designed with “Timeless Japanese Futurism” in mind, it’s got a “shield” for a grille, large fenders, a steeply raked C-pillar, and a one-piece “light blade” at the back—you know, stuff you’ve already seen in past concept cars before.



Nissan’s PR language though has let their imagination run wild by saying the embedded glass flakes in the paint “produce billions of light refractions, reminiscent of a comet crossing the night sky.” Uh, sure. Ditto the new signature color of Nissan’s EV: copper which is supposed to signify, “the color of the sun as a it breaks through the night to start a new day.” Hyperboles all around indeed. Perhaps they should be left in charge with Nissan design, huh?

Inside, the ultra-minimalist dashboard features a flat floor and an instrument panel that’s uncluttered by buttons and switches. Haptic touch controls will be used as the only physical controls are the start button and a knob to operate the 12.3-inch display monitor (sounds familiar?), and the climate controls.



Again, while the Ariya Concept doesn’t exactly stir the soul as a concept car, Nissan hasn’t been coy in saying that they want their next production EV to be a crossover. If they do end up producing something close to the Ariya (it’s sized like the Nissan X-TRAIL if you wanted to know), then it’s possible that they’ll have something quite nice on their hands. As a concept though, it’s actually quite easily to miss at the halls of Tokyo Big Sight.

No, There's Not a Single Bit of Toyota in the Mazda MX-30


With the launch of their first all-electric vehicle, skepticism started creeping in almost immediately: is the MX-30 a full-blown Mazda or is it something a bit more pedestrian wearing fancy KODO clothing?

According to MX-30 program manager Tomiko Takeuchi, it’s purely a Mazda effort with no influence from Toyota or their collaborative EV joint-venture with Denso, EV C.A. Spirit. Takeuchi-san says the development time line is a full 3 years and 5 months using Panasonic batteries. This technology is officially called e-Skyactiv.



Now, because of Mazda’s Well-to-Wheel approach which takes into account not just what energy source is used, but how it’s generated, they sought for a more balanced approach instead of seeking record-braking range or performance. The battery size was chosen to minimize carbon dioxide emissions throughout its life cycle from resource extraction to battery disposal. Still, the MX-30 has a commendable 209-kilometer range. Moreover, they’re also developing an extended-range EV, too powered by a small rotary engine.

Also, because the MX-30 is a pure Mazda effort, it still aims to deliver the same human-centric design and Jinba-Ittai qualities the brand is known for. Underpinned by the Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture that underpins the CX-30 and Mazda3, the MX-30’s multi-directional ring structures and its G-Vectoring Control (GVC) system were tweaked to exploit the characteristics and unique qualities of an EV.

Mazda says this helps it realize seamless vehicle motion in all directions, offers a composed ride quality coming from a feeling that the vehicle constantly gravitates toward the road surface, and an intuitive feeling of total control over all operations, including driving, turning, and stopping. Mazda even developed its own unique motor pedal for the MX-30 for seamless performance while offering energy regeneration without waste.



Oh, and as for the sound? Mazda’s e-Skyactiv will provide aural feedback to the driver that enables him to subconsciously recognize the torque status of the power unit, and thus control vehicle speed with greater precision. It’s going to be artificial, but Mazda says it’s based on the human hearing. It’s akin to knowing the amount of water and speed at which it flows based simply on sound frequency and sound pressure.

Finally, why the name MX-30? In Mazda lingo, “MX” means “Motoring Experiment” and with that, they signify rather unconventional cars in the carmaker’s stable. While the most famous one is the MX-5 (Motoring Experiment Project 5) aka the Miata, there have been other MX models too such as the MX-3 and MX-6. It also helps that these MX cars have either/or coupe or roadster body styles—something the MX-30 also has. Meanwhile, the “30” is likely a confirmation of Mazda changing their naming convention for crossovers to two digits starting with the CX-30. Takeuchi-san is also an owner of a first-generation MX-5, so when they learned that the first-ever EV will be called MX-30, they were understandably giddy with excitement.

Toyota Had the Biggest WTF Moment at the Tokyo Motor Show


The 46th Tokyo Motor Show 2019 had everything: cutesy-patootie sub-compact cars, bonkers concept SUVs, cool-looking EVs, a new stylish wagon, and then you have this: the Toyota e-broom. It had the biggest “WTF” moment at the show and elicited more confused reaction than applause when Toyota President Akio Toyoda and his cartoon counterpart, Morizo showed it to the press.

Officially, Toyota describes the e-broom as: “Modeled after a broom used by a witch to fly through the air, this mobility platform integrates people and machines, allowing users to reaffirm the enjoyment of mobility.”

It’s also a very literal take on “being swept up in the mobility of the future.”

In reality what we see is a phallic-looking stick with an electric motor stuck to it. Well, at least it allows its riders on inline skates to zip through feeling like Harry Potter.

Toyota says it’s all part of their grand plan to transform itself from being just an automaker to a full-blown mobility provider. But honestly? It shows their engineers just have too much free time on their hands. C’mon Toyota—we almost forgave you for coming up with the BMW Supra, and now you give the world the e-broom?

Honda's CEO Explains the Rationale Behind the All-New Jazz's Styling


The styling of the all-new Jazz represents a dramatic design departure compared to Honda’s current efforts. And while some decry it as looking too cutesy, Honda’s own Representative Director and CEO Takahiro Hachigo explains the rationale behind the ahegao styling.

For those who’re not familiar, ahegao is a term for an “exaggerated facial expression during sex.” Please take our word for it because Googling it may result in some NSFW stuff.

Anyway, Hachigo-san explains:
“What we strive to do with this all-new Fit [Jazz] is to establish the standard for compact cars suited to this new era. We believe this car will be able to become an industry standard for the new era only if it can win admiration in the Japanese market where fulfilling customer needs for compact cars is especially difficult compared to other parts of the world. Based on this belief, we squarely and sincerely faced our customers in Japan and perfected this all-new Fit as a global model that Honda will propose from Japan to the rest of the world.”
In other words, the all-new Jazz embraces its Japanese styling and engineering and with that, Honda hopes to win more fans the world over. It actually makes sense given the first-generation Jazz was created first and foremost for the Japanese market. Since then, it’s enjoyed a high reputation as a sub-compact with outstanding packaging, fuel economy, driving performance, and design. Globally, the carmaker has already sold more than 7.5 million units.


Hachigo-san continues:
“We developed this vehicle not merely as a means of transportation for our customers. We strived for a vehicle which will become a part of our customers’ daily lives and make their daily lives more comfortable and enjoyable. This is a compact car for the new era, and this vehicle will set a new standard for Honda automobile development. 
Based on my experience with its driving performance as well as the visual and tactile quality, I have full confidence in this all-new Jazz.”
It’s clear that there’s no stronger stamp of confidence than Honda’s very own CEO saying that the all-new Jazz will be segment defining. At this point, all that’s left is to actually drive the darn thing and see for ourselves if this little Honda can encash all that design and engineering promise.

Love or Hate It, the 2020 Honda Jazz Keeps Its One Trademark Feature


So far, internet opinion is split on the design of the all-new Honda Jazz. Some call it “cute”, while others denounce it as “too girly.” But while it’s still too early to judge it based on the court of public opinion, one thing is for certain: it’s still got one trademark feature that’s sure to please long-time Jazz owners.

Confirmed by Honda themselves, the all-new Jazz retains its lass-leading levels of interior space thanks to the positioning of the fuel tank in the center of the chassis beneath the front seats. More than that, the Jazz also retains its rear “Magic Seats” (ULTR in the Philippines) and this means the seats both fold flat or flip up in a 60/40 split adding seating flexibility.


For the front passengers, the Jazz now features body-stabilizing front seats with a mat-like structure for support. This replaces the previous spring setup to help prevent fatigue on long journeys. In addition, the rear seats themselves have also been improved with a thicker rear seat pad that provides greater comfort.

Now, for its home market of Japan, Honda has already said that the all-new Jazz will be available in five unique trims displaying unique characteristics. While some of these are decidedly very Japanese (the Home and Ness trims to name two), confirmed is that the crossover-inspired Crosstar will be available for global markets.



The Crosstar variant appeals to buyers who want a bit more crossover stle design. With that, it’s got a unique front grille design, water-resistant upholstery, integrated roof rails, and increased ride height.

Japan is the first market to receive the all-new Jazz (February 2020) while Europe will be next by the middle of 2020. With that, expect it to arrive in the ASEAN markets by the end of 2020 at the earliest.

Honda Doubles Down on Electrification Starting with All-New Jazz


With the introduction of the all-new Honda Jazz (Fit in Japan), Honda doubles down on its commitment to electrify 66 percent of its global unit sales by 2030. With that, the carmaker has introduced a new collective name for its electrification efforts: Honda e:TECHNOLOGY (all caps are part of the trademark) which will cover both its two- and four-wheeled mobility products.

According to Honda, the “e” stands for Honda’s desire to “energize people by inspiring them and putting a smile on their face by using electricity as energy.” With that, Honda is committed to create a cycle of generating, using, and connecting with energy while also seamlessly connecting mobility and people’s lives.

An example is how Honda will call their gasoline-electric hybrid technology. Previously, it’s gone by the umbrella term, “Sports Hybrid.” Now, the carmaker will call them e:HEV beginning with the all-new Jazz and all-new Accord Hybrid in Japan. After that, Honda says they will expand the usage of e:HEV to cover other models as well.

Mitsubishi's New SUV Concept Can Run on Diesel, Kerosene, or Alcohol


Mitsubishi finally showed off the Mi-Tech Concept—an off-left field small plug-in hybrid electric SUV that embodies the company’s brand statement, “Drive Your Ambition.” A purely design concept for now, the Mi-Tech Concept does show a new plug-in hybrid drivetrain, a four-motor electric all-wheel drive system, and the most advanced driver assist tech—things which will make it to future Mitsubishi production models.

Taking on a buggy-like appearance, the Mi-Tech adopts the signature Dynamic Shield front design concept, now finished in satin silver (with copper as a secondary color) to accentuate its bold nature. It also has T-shaped headlights which may make it to future Mitsubishi models.


On the sides, the highly raised overfenders and large diameter tires project stability to take on any terrain while at the back, the rear-end looks to be shaped from a single piece of metal ingot while also echoing the same T-shaped light pattern used on the front.

Inside, it’s all about minimalism and simplicity. Mitsubishi has also opted to project all relevant driving information onto the windshield.

Perhaps the most bonkers thing about the Mi-Tech Concept is that it’s a plug-in hybrid vehicle that uses a gas turbine engine as a power generator. Mitsubishi says they’ve chosen to use a gas turbine engine for its high-power output relative to size and the fact that it can be run on a variety of fuels such as diesel, kerosene, and alcohol.


Moreover, the Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) now uses a quad-motor system with the front and rear acting as yaw control units. Mitsubishi has also made the brake caliper engagement electric allowing for faster response while also giving a high level of accuracy and control. While this will give better confidence in all conditions, Mitsubishi says it should provide new driving experiences by allowing the left and right tires to counter rotate creating 180-degree spins.

Aside from augmented reality technology, the Mitsubishi Mi-Tech Concept comes with the next-generation driver assistance technology which extends driver support not only on-road driving, but on off-road driving as well.

Subaru Finally Hits Their Design Stride With All-New, 2020 Levorg


It looks like Subaru is finally hitting a good design stride as evidenced by the introduction of the all-new, second-generation Levorg at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show 2019.

Continuing Subaru’s “grand touring” philosophy, the all-new Levorg aims for more driving enjoyment, comfort, and safety. Above all, it’s the first Subaru model to apply their new design concept of “BOLDER” (yes, in all caps). It goes so far as to suggest that the all-new Levorg expresses “passion that inspires people to try something that has never been tried before.”



Thankfully, despite all this talk of trying something new, the all-new Levorg sticks to a tried-and-tested formula of adding a turbocharged engine with an all-wheel drive drivetrain. In this case, it gets a newly-developed 1.8-liter boxer engine with direct injection and turbocharging which balances performance with environmental performance.

Coupled with the all-new engine, the second-generation Levorg finally migrates to the Subaru Global Platform. For use in this high-performance version, it’s been enhanced with a full inner frame construction that enhances its body rigidity even further.


Of course, being a Subaru, the all-new Levorg gets the next-generation EyeSight driver assist feature which now combines its stereoscopic camera with four radars located in the front and rear bumpers. With that, it gives the EyeSight system a full 360-degree view around the vehicle expanding its range of pre-collision braking operation to cover crossing and turning at intersections of low visibility.

Subaru will reveal more mechanical details of the all-new Levorg closer to its market launch which will start in Japan by the second half of 2020.
