A change of leadership is often viewed either as a time of great promise or uncertainty. In the case of Toyota Motor Philippines though, it’s a show of stability amidst the ever-changing automotive landscape. And while most of the attention has been showered upon either outgoing President Satoru Suzuki or incoming President Atsuhiro Okamoto, this is an opportune time to look back at some Toyota’s accomplishments in the Philippines.
During his message, Toyota Motor Philippines Chairman Alfred Ty laid out some of their accomplishments during the past 31 years and it shows how formidable the Japanese carmaker has become in the Philippines:
- Toyota Motor Philippines has sold over 1.7 million vehicles since they started operations here in 1989.
- For the first 20 years, they sold an average of 30,000 vehicles per year. In the last 10, that grew almost four times to an average of 114,000 vehicles per year.
- Last year alone, they sold 162,011 units—enabling them to keep their 18th straight Triple Crown (Best in Passenger Car Sales, Best in Commercial Vehicle Sales, Best in Overall Sales)
- In the span of 30 years, the company made P 64 billion worth of investments, the most recent of which is P 5.42 billion to join the Philippine government’s Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy or CARS program.
- The all-new Vios, Toyota’s entry into the CARS program, is now 58 percent localized (including assembly costs), far higher than the government mandated 50 percent.
- While the carmaker doesn’t export fully-built cars, they do supply other Toyota factories not just around the ASEAN region, but Japan as well. Last year, Toyota accounted for 30 percent of Philippine auto parts exports, amounting to USD 1 billion.
- There are more than 2,000 men and women directly employed by Toyota Motor Philippines, but over 55,000 people, if you include their network of dealers and local parts suppliers.
- In 2019, they paid P 46.8 billion in various taxes and duties. Cumulatively, they paid P 384 billion since they started operations 31 years ago.
- The Philippines is now the third largest market for Toyota in the ASEAN, and the 9th largest in the world.
- Toyota Motor Philippines was awarded with the Total Quality Award of the Philippines in 2019. It the highest level of national recognition for exemplary organizational performance. It is not an award for product quality or service quality, but for a quality management system which hinges on continuous improvement in the delivery of products and/or services, and provides a way of satisfying and responding to customers’ needs and requirements.
