Toyota Motor Philippines's Discounting the Vios by P 125,000 for the Next 10 Days

Holy February savings, Batman! Toyota Motor Philippines just slashed the prices of their best-selling vehicles! The offer, part of their Toyota Price Slash is valid only for 10 days (up to February 15, 2020) and covers the Vios, Hiace, Wigo, Avanza, Innova, Rush, and Hilux!

If you’re wondering how much savings you can get this month, how about knocking P 70,000 off the Vios 1.5 G? That brings down the price to just P 914,000 for the MT and P 973,000 for the CVT. Oh, and here’s the kicker. Even the Vios 1.5 G Prime can be had for the same price: P 973,000—a discount of P 125,000!

Aside from these substantial discounts, all Vios models from the E variant onwards officially have a 5-year / 150,000-kilometer warranty (up from the 3-year / 100,000-kilometer warranty before). Moreover, if you purchase a Vios on or before February 29, Toyota will even throw in free Periodic Maintenance Service (PMS) for up to 20,000 kilometers!

The same free PMS program is also included in every Hilux purchase made during the Toyota Price Slash promo while all Fortuner 4x2 variants purchased until the end of the month also have the same 20,000-km free PMS.

Toyota Just Came Out with a 283-Horsepower Gazoo Racing Tweaked Hilux

In 2018, Toyota unveiled a Hilux tweaked by their go-fast department, Gazoo Racing. The Hilux GR Sport as it’s officially known did feature new handling bits and some aesthetics upgrades, but the stock drivetrain was, admittedly, a letdown. Two years later, Toyota has learned their mistake and is now giving the Hilux GR Sport a much-needed oomph with the help of a V6 engine.

Still exclusive to the South American market (bummer), the 2020 Hilux GR Sport can now be had with the 1GR-FE 4.0-liter V6 pushing out a more impressive 283 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 376 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm. If this engine sounds familiar, it should be; it’s the same powerplant you find in the Land Cruiser Prado and FJ Cruiser. For its duties in the Hilux GR Sport, the V6 is mated to a 6-speed automatic with Automatic Differential Disconnection (ADD) and A-TRAC (Active Traction Control).

Now, admittedly, its stock power does seem a bit pedestrian for a hotted up truck, but it’s worth noting that the engine is easily tunable to achieve 320 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Tuners, at least, will have fun squeezing every last bit from this engine.

Aside from its new 4.0-liter V6 motor, the rest of the Hilux GR Sport remains similar to its still available diesel counterpart. It gets handling goodies thanks to Gazoo Racing tweaked suspension. Aesthetically, it gets a Gazoo Racing exterior theme with a unique grille, front engine guard, extended fenders, tube-style bed bars, racy stickers, 17-inch wheels, and a heavy-duty crankcase and fuel tank guard. Inside, the same Gazoo Racing theme continues with unique gauges, seats, and steering wheel.

Currently, Toyota and Gazoo Racing has no plans to bring the V6-powered Hilux GR Sport outside South America. However, it won’t be surprising if pickup truck hungry Thailand will also opt to carry it (at least in the diesel trim) in the near future. And if that’s made available there, it’ll only be a matter of time when it reaches the Philippines as well.

Toyota's Hilux-Based Modern PUV Looks Odd, But is Affordable

Toyota Motor Philippines has now entered the government’s PUV Modernization program with this Hilux-based 12-seater offering. Admittedly, the proportions are odd, given the low driver cabin and tall passenger compartment, but at P 998,000, it’s one affordably-priced Modern PUV.

Backed by Toyota’s penchant for making durable and reliable vehicles, it should fast track the roll out of Modern PUVs, particularly the Class 1 where this Hilux PUV competes in.

As Class 1 modern PUV, the Toyota Hilux prototype has smaller dimensions and passenger capacity (12-seater maximum), and can be considered as the ideal PUV type to service inner city, municipality or barangay/secondary routes, which are currently being served by 10-seater multi-cabs.

It should be noted that under the government’s PUVMP, there are actually 3 classes of public utility vehicles: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3:

• Class 1 are 9 to 12 seater PUVs, good for narrow barangay, municipal or provincial roads. Its size and price range makes it a better alternative in areas with lower transport demand.
• Class 2 and 3 (maximum 23 passenger seating capacity) are the current ones being eyed as replacement to the jeepney, except in seating arrangement where Class 2 has the regular jeepney seating, but with ceiling height that will let average Filipinos stand in the middle. Class 2 are made for moving people around the city with quick to board, quick to exit functions.
• Class 3, on the other hand, are front facing variants. These units are the required replacement for all UV Express. Good for point-to-point routes because of its more relaxed seating arrangement. Even though its layout is front facing, the vehicles are required to maintain an aisle in the middle and its width is also being measured.

Despite its small stature, the Hilux is categorized as Class 1 and has all the required features of a modern PUV including dashcams, CCTVs, WiFi, and an automated fare collection system. It’s also fully air conditioned, and PWD-friendly. Additionally, it passes the Philippine National Standard (PNS) requirements for minimum step heights, door widths, seat heights and widths, and ceiling heights, aisle, and gangway widths.

Powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine, the Hilux Class 1 Modern PUV makes a healthy 147 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque coupled to a 5-speed manual. And with an 80-liter fuel tank, it should mean less fuel stops, too.

Toyota Will Race a V8-Powered Hilux for the 2020 Dakar Rally

Toyota Gazoo Racing has confirmed that it will be using the Hilux once again to try to win the grueling Dakar Rally. At the same time, Toyota’s motorsports division has announced its official list of drivers pooling an all-star line-up.

Following Toyota Gazoo Racing (and Toyota)’s philosophy of “making ever-better cars,” the 2020 Hilux is a further evolution to the 2019 model which won the event outright. This Hilux features fully independent suspension, a mid-mounted engine, and all-wheel drive. A 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 sits just behind the front wheels.

With the Dakar Rally scheduled to take place for the first time in Saudi Arabia in January 2020, Toyota has officially announced the members of its works team which is divided into four crews: Nasser Al-Attiyah and navigator Mathieu Baumel; Giniel de Villiers and navigator Alex Haro; Bernhard Ten Brinke and navigator Tom Colsoul; and Fernando Alonso and navigator Marc Coma.

The 2020 Dakar Rally will be contested solely in Saudi Arabia, with the rally starting on January 5, 2020 in the western city of Jeddah. The route will head north, before turning south-east to the capital city of Riyadh where crews will enjoy the traditional event rest day. The second half of the 2020 Dakar Rally traverses through Rub’ al Khali, also known as the “Empty Quarter”, the world’s largest contiguous sand desert, before finishing in the city of Al-Qiddiya on January 17.
