Love to poke fun at the Chinese? Well, here’s proof that you need to take them seriously. Lynk & Co, part of the Geely Auto group just won the first-ever World Title in motorsports as its Cyan Racing Lynk & Co 03 TCR just bagged the 2019 FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) team title. Lynk & Co Cyan Racing claimed the team title by 34 points over main title rivals Hyundai, and 54 points over Honda.
While Lynk & Co are new to the WTCR, as an outfit, Cyan Racing claimed their third straight World Title. The team won the 2017 WTCC title with Volvo Polestar, the 2018 WTCR title with an independent program, and the 2019 WTCR title with Lynk & Co.
Lynk & Co Cyan Racing driver Yvan Muller finished in the driver’s championship by securing third place behind Norbert Michelisz (Hyundai) and Esteban Guerrieri (Honda). This is the 12th year in succession the Frenchman finishes in the top three of World Touring Cars.
Thed Björk finished a strong fourth overall, making it two Lynk & Co Cyan Racing drivers in the top four.
The Chinese have successfully conquered the challenging Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit with Lynk & Co successfully smashing two standing records. The Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept lapped the famed racing circuit in 7 minutes 20.143 seconds, averaging 170.4 km/h. Technically a Chinese car underpinned by Swedish technology and tuned by the Swedes, the 528 horsepower Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept nonetheless flew the Chinese flag there, breaking the lap records set previously by the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 (four-door cars) and Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R (front-wheel drive cars).
The 7:20.143 lap record was set using the full 20.832-kilometer circuit layout as per the official Nürburgring standard and not the shorter 20.600-kilometer version as often used by other manufacturers. The Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept lapped the shorter version of the circuit in 7:15.123.
The race engineers and drivers of Cyan Racing (formerly Polestar Racing), the official motorsport partner to Geely Group Motorsport, have developed the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept as a road car version of the race car run by the team in the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR).
The road car is developed by largely the same team that developed the previous concept cars of Cyan Racing, the 450-hp Volvo C30 Concept and the 508-hp Volvo S60 Concept.
Lynk & Co and Cyan Racing won’t stop there. Development will continue throughout the last part of 2019 with the team turning attention to winter testing in the north of Sweden as part of creating a performance car for all roads, all seasons, and all conditions.
